The letters included in this book were chosen by the artist's widow, Olda Kokoschka, and the poet and novelist Alfred Marnau, whose friendship with the Kokoschkas began in London during World War II. Apart from a few letters not hitherto avaliable and published here for the first time, all those in the present translation appeared in the four-volume German edidtion (1984-88) of Kokoschka's correspondence edited by Olda Kokoschka and Heinz Spielmann, Director of the Landesmuseum of Schleswig-Holstein.
